In Power & Politics Episode 23 Air Date: 6/9/24, Frank Cipolla and Dr. Bart Rossi, Ph.D. discuss the Trump guilty verdict on thirty-four felony charges. Also discussed is the border: Biden’s executive order in the wake of the GOP first authoring a bipartisan deal and then voting it down.
How does this change the dynamic of the 2024 presidential election, and how does the verdict impact independent voters? Is it a plus or a minus? How would it affect any other candidate, and what would Donald Trump say about that candidate?
Power & Politics
Trump conviction
Trump did have an affair. He did engage in a conspiracy to cover it up to affect the election, and he engaged in false recordkeeping to hide it.
From a psychologist’s perspective, independent voters Dr. Rossi believe the verdict will have a profound effect. He doesn’t think that it will be old news come election day.
The Border
The southern border has been a continuous debate for decades. In 2024, GOP members in the Senate got together with Democrats to craft what has been deemed — by many in the GOP — as the toughest immigration bill authored. Representatives such as Langford and McConnell advocated for it and pushed back against House members who attacked it. Then, Donald Trump advocated for House members to kill the deal so that he could use immigration as a wedge issue in his campaign. They all consented, and eventually, the Senate members abandoned it, too.
So after a year of GOP members calling on President Biden to fix the border “with the power he has through executive order.” Finally, he did, in the wake of the failed legislation, sign an executive order, which the GOP now calls a “political stunt.”
Anxiety
People are angry and frustrated. Dr. Rossi suggests that rather than being angry, get involved, regardless of what side of the political spectrum you are on.
