NBC 6 analysis of first democratic debate winners outlining who stood out, and why. With 20 candidates on the stage over two nights, it changes the forum and raising the stakes. Dr. Bart Rossi, Ph.D. provides insight.
This year the field is wide and deep. On a policy basis, the candidates stretch from the far left, to the middle. Bernie Sanders is a self-proclaimed socialist, with far left position policies. Some are popular, some not so much. Joe Biden is a centrist who has the high name recognition as Vice President in the Obama administration. And, he has the highest support thus far from the black community, despite candidates Cory Booker and Kamala Harris. Also despite a not so good showing in the debates.
Elizabeth Warren has put forth more policy positions than any candidate, and she did so early. Just about any topic, you chose she will tell you “yes, I have a plan for that.”

Political psychologist Dr. Bart Rossi suggests that elections are not just about the policy positions. While the debate stage provides the opportunity to address and defend one’s views, it is the way they do that has high impact. A winning personality is key. People elect those they like, trust, and relate to.
Everyone across the spectrum noted that Biden did poorly, Warren and Harris did well. But according to Dr. Rossi, he also notes that Booker and Castro did well too, and here is why.
