U.S. troop withdrawal from Syria and Afghanistan seems to be Trump “America First” action. As everyone debates the move, Dr. Bart Rossi Ph.D joins the conversation at WINK News This Morning.
There has been a LOT of discussion about this latest move by the president for U.S. troop withdrawal from Syria, as well as Afganistan. His declaration took everyone by surprise. He hadn’t discussed it with anyone. Not his national security advisors, the SecDef, joint chiefs, or allies.
Dr. Rossi asks “what is America First” policy? To his base that he is putting America needs ahead of the world. To many experts, however, insist that this move is not in America’s best interest. It is in the best interest of Russia, Iran, and Turkey.
One has to ask, just went on in that phone call with Turkey that the president would hang up and make a move like this?
America First Ideology
This president bristles against NATO. He asks why we defend them. Why are we engaged in combat zones in foreign lands? Yet the only time Article 5 was ever invoked, was to America’s benefit. Post 9/11 — the NATO alliance rallied to America’s side. Now, according to many experts, he is making the same error G.W. made with the infamous “Mission Accomplished.” Trump claims ISIS is defeated “we beat them, we beat them badly.” Experts disagree. ISIS is not nearly defeated, they say, as they still have 10s of thousands of fighters on the ground.
Defense Secretary General Jim Mattis stunned Washington D.C. when he abruptly resigned in protest. Bret McGurk who was the top envoy overseeing the ISIS fight did the same. In General Mattis’s resignation letter, he rebuked the president’s worldview, claiming the president’s decision will damage U.S. national security while aiding Russia, Iran, and Turkey agenda.
Again, what happened on that call?
This withdrawal from Syria and Afghanistan also puts at Kurds at risk. They’ve been one of our most effective allies in the battle against ISIS, and Al Qaeda before them. Without the U.S.s presence, as small as it essentially gives Turkey a green light to go after them. We abandoned them in Iraq, and now, it seems, president Trump is abandoning them in Syria. Then we wonder why militia allies eventually become America haters.
Dr. Rossi notes that clearly, Trump spoke about an America First agenda while on the campaign trail, so this shouldn’t be a shock. What should be a shock is the way he went about it, with apparently no plan in place to effectuate a smooth transition.
U.S. troop withdrawal from Syria and Afghanistan
In this episode, Dr. Bart Rossi investigates what America First really means.
The president has done many controversial things since taking office. From various statements, however, it seems this latest unilateral decision has finally gotten Republicans in the Senate to sit up and take notice.
